BWC 2010 Day of Outreach Results

From Kurt Richardson, our Day of Outreach coordinator: On Monday, January 4th, 2010, approximately 420 students and staff went out into the city, linking up with over 30 other people from 9 local Boston churches and 4 organizations and 1 apartment complex in the city.

Over the course of the afternoon over 75% of the students were privileged to engage someone in a conversation about the Gospel. All told, over 471 such conversations took place (as is our custom, the students went out in pairs). Probably twice as many more “spiritual conversations” took place which did not include a Gospel presentation.

Between 10-15 people indicated they entrusted their lives to Jesus Christ. Over 350 10lb boxes of food were distributed in conjunction with 4 of the churches and 2 of the organizations. One team of students shoveled snow in driveways on 11 streets in Dorchester (in the neighborhood of the Boston Project). Another group of 40 distributed granola bars, gum and church brochures to 5000 people above T stations in Cambridge. An estimated 1/10 of those people were personally invited to the church.

Shane & Shane Perform at BWC

The “Shane Everett right-armed Pentecostal fist pump” is the official dance move to the song “Everything is different”, the title track from contemporary Christian artist Shane & Shane’s newest album. Shane Everett, performing alongside Shane Barnard, demonstrated the move Saturday night during their show at the Boston Sheraton Hotel. Campus Crusade for Christ’s fifth annual Boston Winter Conference hosted the concert.

Saturday afternoon, 342 college students checked into the hotel for the five-day conference. To end the first night Shane & Shane took the stage for a public concert.

They have worked with Campus Crusade in the past, and often play shows on the college circuit.

“I guess that’s just who listens to our music,” Barnard said. “We love to play on campus and have the opportunity to be involved with them. That age group is so cool.

Esther Brown, a student at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, won the best seats in the house during the evening’s main conference session, which included the honor of sitting on a couch with friends in front of all the other seats. She was impressed with Shane & Shane’s attitude and approach to worship.

“They were quick to give all praise to God, and that was really neat to see people so committed to God,” Brown said.

This is the type of memory Barnard hopes for when he takes the stage.

“Jesus is what we want people to remember when we leave,” he said. “We hope God shows off.”

In addition to songs from their newest album (released in Nov 2009) they played past songs and even a Christmas song from their recent Christmas tour.

They ended with a song that coincided with the conference theme, Glory. The song titled “Worthy of Affection” was inspired by a verse in Hebrews that says Jesus is the radiance of the glory of God (Hebrews 1:3).

Updated: BWC Blood Drive 2010

Did you know you can bless the city of Boston and the state of MA by donating blood at the BWC? MA is the only state in the union that must import blood due to it’s small size and a high concentration of major health care providers.

Giving blood is easy and makes a real difference in the lives of others who have been in God’s image. You would think that those who follow Jesus would know a thing or two about giving blood. Share the grace and mercy of the Kingdom of God by sharing your blood with someone who needs it.

To give, please CLICK HERE to schedule an appointment for the January 5 blood drive at the Sheraton Boston Hotel during the BWC.

PLEASE SCHEDULE NOW, so that the Red Cross knows that they can count on you and many others to give blood on that day. The Red Cross responds to demand to determine how many resources to devote to a drive. Make your appointment today so that the Red Cross can plan to be ready for hundreds of donors.

Here’s a recap of the first ever BWC Blood Drive last year.

Amy: BWC helped IGNITE my time…

Amy Bullock, from UMass Dartmouth, attended BWC last year. For her it was an experience that completely changed the way she approached her life at school the following semester.

“It was truly beneficial reconnecting with my campus fellowship during winter break and being encouraged by staff and speakers. BWC is four days of praise and worship, sermons and deepening your relationship with God. You will return from the conference on fire for God and even more in love with him. BWC will equip you to impact friends, family and your campus. It will be the highlight of your winter break after Christmas, which is key! Your enthusiasm will carry over to your semester.”

“The highlight of BWC for me was a small-group session with Susy Silk. She spoke on managing time, and encouraged us to do things with purpose. She challenged us to evaluate our schedules and weed out the nonessentials. A lot of things we commit our time to really have no eternal impact, so why are we spending so much time on them? For me it was all the clubs I had joined as resume boosters or related to my major. Being so involved was keeping me from having prayer and quiet time in my daily schedule. It was also keeping me from being intentional in relationships. I had friends, but in how many of those friendships was I really investing in the other person, and encouraging them to follow God?”

“God clearly showed me that I needed to make more time for him. Some of the clubs I was investing my time in were not bearing fruit, and that time could be better used for Him. Now I make time for God’s word and for other people – my time is being used for eternity.”
